A New Appreciation for Portrait Photography

In my final week before moving to Castelldefels, Barcelona, I had the opportunity to photograph someone very close to me—my mother-in-law. It was a unique experience, not just because of our personal connection but because it sparked a deeper appreciation for what portrait photography can represent.

She’s an incredibly stylish, charismatic woman with endless stories of her vibrant modeling career, from magazine shoots to runway shows. So when she asked me to take some portraits of her, I was excited—and admittedly a bit nervous. Photographing someone with her history in front of the camera felt like a big responsibility, but it also turned into a beautiful reminder of why I love what I do.

The Intimacy of Portrait Photography

Portrait photography is unlike any other form of photography. Getting so close to someone with the camera feels vulnerable, intimate, and, at the same time, incredibly powerful. You’re not just capturing their appearance—you’re capturing their energy, their story, and a glimpse of who they are beneath the surface.

With my mother-in-law, the session unfolded naturally. We worked with simple setups in her home, focusing on natural light and clean backgrounds. As the shoot progressed, I realized how much portraiture is a shared experience. It’s about connection, trust, and allowing someone to show up as themselves.

Her professional modeling background made her comfortable in front of the camera, but there was still an authenticity in the moments we captured—her warmth, her elegance, and the quiet confidence that comes with experience.

Celebrating Diversity Through Portraits

This session made me reflect on the beauty of diversity in portrait photography. There’s something extraordinary about photographing people of different ages, genders, and backgrounds. Each person brings a unique energy to the frame, and the process of capturing that is both humbling and inspiring.

Whether it’s the grace of someone with decades of life experience, the vibrancy of youth, or the strength and individuality that come from cultural and personal diversity, every portrait tells a story. Photography has this incredible ability to celebrate those differences and, at the same time, remind us of our shared humanity.
