If you’re expecting and considering a maternity photoshoot in Barcelona, you might have a few questions:

  • When is the best time for maternity photos?
  • Where should I have my session?
  • What should I wear?
  • Do I need to pose or prepare in any way?

As a Barcelona maternity photographer, my goal is to create a relaxed, enjoyable experience that leaves you with beautiful images of this special time. To help you decide if a maternity shoot is right for you, here’s everything you need to know—using a recent rooftop maternity session in Gràcia, Barcelona as an example. :)

When Should I Book a Maternity Photoshoot?

The ideal time for maternity photography is typically between 28 and 36 weeks, when your baby bump is beautifully round but you’re still feeling comfortable. That said, you can book a session at any stage of pregnancy, even as late as 39 or 40 weeks!

For example, the maternity session I recently shot in Gràcia, Barcelona, took place just one day before the mom’s due date. While some might think that’s too late, she felt amazing and wanted to capture these final moments before meeting her baby girl.

If you’re wondering whether it’s too early or too late for a maternity shoot, the best time is simply whenever you feel ready! There are no rules around this and always remember, it is your shoot.

Where Should I Have My Maternity Photos Taken?

There are many stunning locations for pregnancy photography in Barcelona, depending on your style - at-home sessions (cozy and intimate), outdoor sessions (beach, park, city streets)

For this session, we stayed on the rooftop of her building in Gràcia. This was the perfect choice for her—she didn’t have to travel anywhere, we had beautiful light and could enjoy the Barcelona skyline as a beautiful backdrop. If you’re in your third trimester and prefer not to move around too much, an at-home or rooftop session can be a fantastic option!

What Should I Wear for My Maternity Photoshoot?

Choosing the right outfit for your maternity photos can make a big difference in how you feel and how the images turn out. Here are some tips:

Soft, flowing dresses highlight the baby bump beautifully.

Neutral tones or pastels work well with natural light.

Fitted clothing can accentuate your silhouette.

Simple, minimalistic outfits allow the focus to stay on you.

For this Barcelona maternity session, the mom-to-be chose a fitted skirt and top in a neutral brown color, that complimented her skin tone and hair beautifully. The most important thing is that you feel confident, beautiful, and relaxed!

Do I Need to Know How to Pose?

Not at all! As your photographer, I guide you through the process to create natural, effortless maternity portraits. The key is to capture authentic emotions, so whether you’re laughing, holding your bump, or simply gazing into the distance, the results will be stunning.

During the Gràcia rooftop maternity session, we started with a relaxed conversation about how she was feeling, her pregnancy experience, and her excitement about meeting her baby girl. This helped her feel at ease, and by the time we started taking photos, everything felt natural and effortless.

How Long Does a Maternity Photoshoot Last?

Maternity sessions don’t have to be long or exhausting. A typical session lasts 45 minutes to 1.5 hours, depending on the location and the number of outfit changes.

For the Gràcia maternity session, we kept it short—about 45 minutes—so she wouldn’t feel too tired. The session was relaxed, with no pressure or stress.
